“No “I” In Team”
As a production company, many of our best stage performances have run on live television. We may hold numerous eight to ten hour rehearsals for weeks in advance to get as close as possible to what we feel is perfection. With all of the preparation and attention to detail, the performance can still have the potential to be captured in a way that it wasn’t intended.
Did we prepare? Yes. Did we provide entertainment with excellence? Absolutely! Did our worldwide viewing audience witness that excellence? Unfortunately, No.
Did we fail?
If one member of the team fails, we all fail. There is no I in TEAM. Yes, we took the necessary steps we felt would lead us to success, and we should be proud of the hard work and preparation that was put out. What would become of this level of failing forward would be a higher level of accountability in the future, and maybe some additional checks and balances we may have missed. No matter how much hard work we put into a particular project, there’s always an opportunity for team discovery. You can almost always find something you could have done better or differently.
Sometimes failing forward is part of the process, so don’t be so hard on yourself or your team when it happens. Encourage your team to grow and move forward. Esteem your team and build confidence that keeps the creative juices flowing, and drives away those potential mental blocks.
Don’t let today’s failure stop tomorrow’s team success. Continue to fail FORWARD!
